if you wanted to check the RAM type that you are using without opening the system you may use free software from the net such as CPU-Z which provide accurate information about the RAM type that you are using and the chipset of your motherboard. I find it very useful and i'm using it for years. Here is the link to the site http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

Ways to tell if you have DDR ram is to watch the dos-like hardware display box that appears & look at the memory part when the thing boots, press F2 or whatever key it is to get to ur motherboard's 'bios program' & have a careful look in there, look in 'device mismanager' after a right-click on ur 'my monster', or 'system information' in 'system tools', study any pics that would most likely be in the owners manual or motherboard driver disc, open the case & look at &/or remove(requires anti-static precautions) what you already have installed if it is it to match, look at all the different types in a shop or where purchasing from, or ask someone!

These things usually work for me.

A simple and easy to answer that is if you look the ram you will realise that DDR had one space between the connector one side is slightly smaller than the other and SD Ram has 2 spaces .

need more info. Too be sure of ram type, remove current chip & check notches. It will say right on the chip what it is. Go online with your computer make or mother board to find out about chips to use.
If it is brand specific like Dell only certain types will work & then maybe require combination.
If you are doing this yourself, make sure that you ground your hand on power supply or metal prior to removing & handling ram. This will eliminate static discharge.

Check your manufacturers support site to see how your system was configured or you'll have to open up your pc case and physically look at the RAM!
