The US pays less for gas than anyone else in the world except the middle east. It costs about three times as much in Europe, about twice as much in Australia. I would suggest driving smaller cars or use alternative fuel sources like LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

Not filling up for two days won't help, they know you'll have to buy more on the third day. The only way for it to work is the selective boycott. This is where you target only one oil company, say, Exxon, and don't buy from there until prices drop to a certain level. They will have to lower prices to get customers back. The others will have to lower prices to compete. When prices go back up, you target another company, and so on. They will soon get the message.

gas prices are determined by private commercial enterprises and the cost they buy oil from other countries or the costs of drilling for domestic oil. there are already laws regulating fair trade and price gouging. congress cannot get involved unless the oil companies are engaging in anti-trust, nation wide price gouging or some other illegal or questionable activity. the president, although capable of making executive orders, really has no law making ability as per the consitution. the thing is, this is a capitalistic society and private enterprise is encouraged by not having the government involved as much as possible. this does not mean you are powerless. if you feel unfair business practices are conducted by oil companies, write your law makers, organise a petition demanding congress to look into the matter of price gouging, research the politician voting records online to see how your senators voted or find interviews or debates and read where they stand on this or other issues and either push for them to stay in office or campaign for their opponents if you do not, join an organization that holds the various levels and branches of government accountable if a blind eye is turned to illegal pricing by the oil companies. the lower part of your question is a step in that direction.

We have little control over the price of oil because it's all related to political and cultural events all over the world. Also, prices and production are set by OPEC states, notably Saudi Arabia, and even Venezuela. The only thing the president could do would be to release a certain amount of oil reserves from our emergency supplies, but that would only provide a few days' price relief and would not even approach the issue as far as our addiction to oil. The solution is finding alternative means of energy to feed our hunger--such as ethanol & nuclear power, which is a very clean source of energy. (Read up on how France relies on nuclear power as their sole energy source).

If the Demo would let us build more refineries and drill more the price would go down. But they are on the save the tree kick so we have to pay. I say put the drills back on the Calif coast and lets open up the Northwest. The first hint of the USA starting up the drilling would send prices back to under a dollar

Well, there you go. Maybe you tripped over the answer to your own question. Maybe it isn't the government's JOB to "do something" about gas prices in a capitalist nation like ours. Maybe "the working man" needs to figure it out for himself - and boycott, or carpool, or find alternate means wherever possible. Buy less, the price will go down. Basic law of economics. Demand up, supply up. Demand drops, price drops.
