Every time i watch the news, some DIES or something really HORRIFIC happens like now, Virgina tech.
Im traumatized by the news, its too depressing and too life controlling for me to watch the news. i have to believe that the news is fake and most of the bad stuff is acted to protect myself.
What i cant understand is why people do such inhumane things like kill other humans? attack and abuse?
What would make them do such things?
its so confusing to me how anyone can just randomly kill someone for no reason.
its ruining me in a way, im terrified to go out at night, im terrified to live in America which is my dream. i CANT trust anyone.

You should probably do some clear headed thinking and regain perspective. This is difficult when you watch the news because the news twists how you view the world. In fact, many times the news has been used to bring people to a particular perspective, whipping them into a frenzy which actually causes a war, creating killing and inhumanity. Therefore it is essential for you not to be one of the foolish ones who gets too excited by what they are hearing. Your question "Is humanity falling apart?" The answer is a clear no, at least for the last several decades. There have been no wars on the scale of WW1 and 2. The genocides which have taken place have been much smaller and caused much more concern than the multiple horrible examples of the past. The mass starvations nothing like the examples of earlier in the century. While AIDS is not good, many other horrible diseases are falling into the dust heap of history. Environmental pollution is under the spotlight. The cold war is over, and widespread nuclear annihilation seems unlikely for now (despite the fact the Iran "might" get a bomb). Communism is dead and discredited, as are kings, dictators, and all other dehumanizing collectivist systems. It aint all good, but we're in a pretty good place right now as a species. The Virginia Tech is horrible, but how many people died in traffic accidents today? from cancer? from a car bomb somewhere? from common murder? How many had babies? reunited with family? fell in love? bought a new home? learned how to whistle? Life is what it is, and you better live while you got it.

Humanity never was together. Now, the closer we rub against each other the more we fall apart. And with modern media we see it more. As an old journo, I'd quote the saying "Good news is no news - but it needs an occasional good news story to keep people reading". The media can never tell all the news - there are a lot of good people doing their best out there. As an old feller I remind myself that sometimes things have to become unbearable before people are desperate enough to make them better. Meanwhile we can each observe, learn, think, in order to be wiser, survive, and do what we can - and there's always something we can do. For instance, climate change and Government inaction is appalling - but if you join a Green movement, pester politicians, write to media, and do what you can locally you'll feel better than you will admitting defeat. Most of the problems stem from entrenched power that benefits from the status quo, and people's unwillingness to let go of familiar ideas. So, within the law and social customs one must work on that. Good luck.

The problem with watching the news is that it's only an hour long, so they report the big and the bad only. If you want to redeem your hope for humanity, research charities and non profit organizations in your area. Or even better, volunteer at one. There are a lot of incredibly wonderful people out there doing incredibly wonderful things, but that stuff just doesn't make the headlines. There are good people! You just have to look for them and remind yourself that they're there, and become one of them. The more great people there are in the world, the better, and if you want to feel better about the goodness in the world, yourself is a great place to start!!

I really think these sort of events have a ying yang effect on people, sometimes it takes the worst to bring out the best in people.

This should urge you to make your government have gun control laws, this stuff does happen in other countries, but only once ever 30 odd years, it seems to happen quite frequently in America and the difference is that these other countries have gun control laws while America doesn't.

Every time something horrible like this happens people rise to the occasion, they rise to the challenge, think of all the masscres throughout history and you will see people getting and saying 'this is wrong, and i'm saying so'.

As long as we continue to do so humanity will not fall apart, we will continue striving to become better.

Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger.

In our wonderous, unthinkably fabulous society we have become sensitized to tragedy, because it is so rare.

In our society, it is virtually unthinkable for a parent to lose their child. As late as 100 years ago, losing a few was a given.

War, too, has been virtually eradicated. In the Iraqi war, we have lost 3,000 people, and it is called a quagmire. In World War 2, 3,000 people might have died in a single battle. In the Civil War, 3,000 might have been a skirmish. In Roman times, it was not unknown for 50,000+ people to lose their lives in a single battle

Diseases like Tubercluosis, Dysentry, Typhoid, and Small pox killed people by the millions. Most of these diseases have been virtually eradicated.

Prior to the modern age, being below the poverty line used to mean that you were too poor to afford scraps of bread, and you starved to death. Nowadays, people below the poverty line are suffering from an obesity outbreak.

We should use this time as a reflection. That 33 people can die and it is a national day of mourning and sadness. We should be greatful that we as a race have reduced such tragedies to isolated incidents, and most of us will never have to experience anything so horrific. And of course, because of our safety and security, that leaves us the spiritual and physical ability to mourn for those who lost, and to come together as a nation to comfort them. Few peoples in history had that luxury.

Thank you for one of the most important questions facing us today!! STAR for it!!

Yes, indeed, chaos is taking over slowly.... chaos due to lack of control and direction. Parents are losing control over children, teachers are losing control over students, society and Governments are losing control over their citizen and above all, every individual is losing control over own self.

But everything is not lost... it is never too late... there is still a lot of positive side to the humanity surviving and ticking..... there are parent loving children, teacher respecting students and law abiding citizen.

What is needed is a subtle change in our values... we need to bring back some of the old values related to what we have always understood as good Samaritan behaviour and attitude. Overemphasis on money, especially the trend of society honouring rich people rather than the deserving ones, must be rectified soon enough. We have to make a beginning towards this at our own family level first and then extend it to the society as a whole. I sincerely believe that we human beings are intelligent enough to realise the veracity and urgency of this important task today!!

Humanity has never really been together, so I do not see how it can fall apart.

People have been killing and abusing people all the way from history to modern times. And it happens more in other countries then in America.

It's sad to hear such a thing but yes, news are horrific ! We are unable to change anything though, so we're looking for some escape, although there isn't any ! I believe you shouldn't give it to much thought, you can't change anything...
You only have one life, live it with dignity and respect towards fellow man and you can't miss !
