If they weren't in a designated spot, for which they have paid and are licenced to busk, then you were wrong to give them anything.

The ones I hate most are the ones (mainly illegal immigrants judging by their lack of English) who ride the tube all day, simply getting on a train and moving from carriage to carriage at each stop and play their instruments in peoples faces.

As for the people saying you are stopping them eating etc, they obviously don't know about the food token scheme that several london shops chains and charities uned to run.

You could give buskers, beggars etc these tokens and they could exchange them for food - and only food - in designated shops.

An ex girlfriend was nearly assaulted by someone when she gave him one of these, despite his sign saying he was hungry, because he only wanted money.

I'm not saying they are all like that though, there is one busker in Exeter that I have no problems giving money to, and my partner often gives food to, as other than what is needed to eat, and put a roof over her and her daughters heads, the rest goes into a bank account for her daughter so that she will have a better start in life than her mother had.

And there is also a guy who begs near Tottenham Court tube station who, when he gets close to what he needs to buy a meal will ask for that ammount, and will then go straight to a nearby outdoor chinese food stand and buy the food - this guy was an army officer who served in the Falklands, who was badly assaulted meaning he could no longer work, has no family, and was abandoned by the state.

Shows just how caring the British Government is.

I'm sure that buskers get enough foreign coins from tourists for them to have by now devised some way of making money out of them.

no, as long as the busker came from the same country as the coins!

If not, then you should make sure you give the next busker you see some money to help to clear your conscience.

well you gave him money but money he cannot use. in this way you got his hopes up taht he can finally afford a sandwich to ease the feeling of hunger and when it came time to buy it he realised he is back to square one because the money he has are not usable in the uk.
so in a sense you did more harm than good since the low after the up causes more damage in comparison to a state of low that leaves some place of hope that maybe an up will come.
so in other words you got him happy and excited that he might get something to eat and in the end he got dissapointed and lost the hope he invested in the feeling.
don't do it again! i repeat it is better not to do anything at all then to make someone invest hope and then get dissapointed in the end!

If the busker was good and genuinely trying to earn a living then it was wrong.

How would you feel if you went to work and your wages arrived in foreign coins.

Hopefully you have grown up now.

Well everyone does something silly - LOL

I might have encouraged other people to give real coins , so if a person saw you and dropped a quid in after then you did some good after all.

...... I remember reading years ago about a London Underground busker who'd found a 1912 Australian threepence in his collection ...... worth about 4,000 quid .... I say ..... wouldn't it be funny if the coin you gave him was that same threepenny bit ... ???
