If the OS is the issue:
You need to reinstall Windows 2000. You probably installed it into the same partition that XP was in. So now you have two OS in one partition, even though XP crashed it is still in there unless your friend deleted it from the partition, which could be the cause of the problem. Reinstall Win2000 or another OS, but make sure you delete all of the old partitions!!

As far as your video card...I recommend that you check if it is functioning properly. Click-Start. Right Click -My Computer, Click-Properties, Click Hardware, Then Device Manager, and check if your video card has like a yellow symbol next to it, if so then there is something wrong with it. Hope this helps

The problem was probably something to do with your installation of XP. You could have reinstalled XP rather than 2000. It doesn't really matter.

The problems you have now is that the drivers haven't been properly installed for the video card and monitor needs to be set up properly.

Use your installation disk, that came with the computer, to install or update the drivers.

Sounds like you need to either reinstall the drivers for your video card, or, you need to replace the video card all together.

Could you give us more details about the computer, like how old it is, the make and model, etc?

If the color of the monitor is not good, it might be that the vga isn't working well. And if the pc has been crashed try to format it again.

Try restoring from your restore cd again. If you had xp and went to 2k your most likely missing some hardware drivers.

I would try the restore cd again...
