My Aunt ran the Marathon a few years back and I went along with her boyfriend to cheer her on. We got the train to Blackheath and watched the start of the race then walked to different points in the race. Alot of people do this so we just followed the crowds. I would say to see the marathon best you should walk around otherwise you only catch one bit.
If you really dont fancy walking around alot there are a few other places but ive heard that this year the Cutty Sark area is going to have limited access because of restoration work so i'd avoid it.
Tower bridge is nice because you see the runners then walk down to the Tower of London were they come passed a little later on.
Obviously the best place of all is the Mall as everyones happy because its the finishing line and you get to see all the great sites- Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliment and you can stop off at the pub before you need to be there!
One more thing- Try going to this website: http://www.london-marathon.co.uk/site/spectators/
Its official and they have great ideas for spectators (entertainment, food, landmarks etc)
Hope this helps!!

The best atmosphere is at the start of the race in Greenwich - and it is a lovely park for a picnic. If you want a less crowded area to watch from, go for the Docklands vantage points. It is possible to move around the course fairly easily, via the Docklands Light Railway, so you could watch the start at Greenwich then move onto Docklands, then towards Tower Bridge.
Have fun, it should be a great day.

i must admit that i have only ever watched the race from the television. However i would think that going to London and joining the crowds would be great fun. I understand the need for a good place to stand if you are going to go though and hope some of the advice you have gained proves useful.
I would also like to enjoy the race from a participators point of view. Would need to get fit first though!!!!!!!!! may be in a year or so when i have done some serious training.

I ran the marathon and also been a spectator and for me the best point is on Tower Bridge. There is such a big cheer and you are so close to the athletes that there is nothing like it. I would also recommend the Mall, Greenwich and Embankment.

properly before everything you may desire to correctly known, are they extra healthful adequate to end? ;) because of the fact if the solutions "no" then you definately want to observe from the Docklands or Greenwich highway aspects. a minimum of then you definately'll see them in the previous they supply up. If the respond is "definite" they might end, then stand outdoors Buckingham Palace on the Mall. it is the place the race extremely finishes, so which you would be there to observe them end, congratulate and take photographs. in the adventure that your feeling energetic, and that they are going to end, you may desire to do Docklands first, then run for the tube, and meet your pal on the end line. merely be sure you verify on the TfL web site that there are no engineering works on that tube line that weekend (the Marathon is on a Sunday so its attainable). as quickly as you realize which lines are actually not working, you are able to plan the place your going to stand first, and then which tube you will get to the Mall on with none issues.

Probably around the Tower Bridge area. As the race goes over the Bridge at 13 Miles and loops back under at about 22 Miles.

tower bridge is absolutely wonderful for watching the marathon. the atmosphere is astounding. be prepared for tears in your eyes when you witness the courage of the runners. i jumped on the tube and went to other places to watch too. its good to cheer people on where there is fewer people. thats the places where runners need most support. i dont know where to suggest for the quieter spots. but just ask a police man . have a good day. dont go home early. the late runners need support too

Stand at the Cutty Sark, along the cobbles by the Greenwich foot tunnel, then cross to the isle of dogs and walk down towards Wapping twice the fun :0)
