universe.
Universe is beginningless. There is no particular point in time where universe is created. It's always been there. That's what I think.

Your question implies that there is or was a creator, in this case the creator must have existed before the creation of the universe. However, Aristotle thought about this and realised that if you keep going with this line of thinking you have to go back infinitely. So he proposed that the universe had always existed and thus had no beginning.
You might also like to look at Genesis for other ideas of what existed before the universe did.
Another issue is the meaning of the word universe. The old meaning of the universe is everything, so there cannot have been anything if everything (universe) did not yet exist. But perhaps you do not mean everything when you use universe but only the physical things that are now present around us, in this case you might suggest a non-physical thing, or a thing not bound by the same laws and restrictions as other physical things (God) that could have existed before everything else.

I suspect there never was a "before" and the universe always has been and always will be. The "universe" by definition would seem to mean everything, even if that "everything" was actually nothing at all. Since this is a question about time, you might also ask "what time was it before time started?" It is a big ole assumption to think that things have a beginning and an end.

I personally believe in the Big Bang Theory, however I am also very religious. The universe as we know it today was originally less than the size of a marble, and could fit in the palm of one's hand. Whilst in this state, and before, I believe it was a timeless void that existed, almost similar to how the Book of Genesis describes things before God's creation of the Earth.
Before that? Perhaps there were many marble-sized universes, and ours for some reason is the one that took hold. Maybe they all experienced "big bangs" and they exist parallel to our universe right now. Perhaps a previous universe collapsed in on itself, giving birth to this one.
We are more likely to find out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.

I winked into existence with a giant cosmic-size EYE staring at me. This EYE was what people call God.
I said..."What the hell is this?"
God replied..."I made you so you could keep me company."
And I said..."What now?
And HE said..."I was hoping you'd know."
And I said..."I don't know anything, except you suddenly made me exist because you were lonely.
And HE said..."Wouldn't you have done the same given the circumstances we're both in?
And that's when I exploded, causing what you call The Big Bang...sorry, but sitting in front of a giant cosmic eye for eternity was unbearable...and so here you all are...my apologies...I will send rock music to ease your pain...

Things beyond human comprehension. Time is just a constant made up by man to quantify existance. Don't try to think about it :P
Creationists and Big bang advocates will have many differing theories on what was there. No one will ever really know.

Simple - slick - religious answer are undoubtedly wrong. All they lead to is cyclical and useless nonsense. This is the category for wisdom - understanding and truth after all. religious answers should be in myths and legions
