i was wondering while researching manet, why was picassos Les Demoiselles d’Avignon accpeted in society, despite being of prostitutes in a brothel, in contrast with manets olympia, which was rejected.

manet was much earlier whilst picasso s much later and society was more liberal
also spain was more liberal than france

there is a lot of difference in both the paintings. While manet painted Olympia... i.e. venus... who was respected a lot Picasso painted the scene of brothel itself. However at the time of its first exhibition in 1916, the painting by Picasso was deemed immoral.

Picasso was not accepted...not at first. But it was new. Manet's Olympia was 'Just a nude', not to mention that her nudity was enhanced by a fully clothed black woman in the back. You could say she was too nude.

Picasso's was seen as 'clearly art' as to Manet's 'clearly pornographic'. The realism (as in not deified) was to confronting.
