babies can be bi lingual from their first words as my kids were if they are exposed to it on a daily biases. it will not if it is only given in key words hear & there. Why don't you do a crash course & learn a language & then when bub is learning to talk you can also teach it the new language. Be warned though. bubs forget as quick as they learn. My child of two who was bi lingual in Italian & English forgot how to speak italian in a few months when she was not exposed to it daily. So we then kept it up & now the all speak several languages

Hi Shelman, That is a great ideal you could start when the child is awear of what is going on around her. That probably will be around 2 years old. But you can still read stories to her now. It's better to start teaching children at the youngest age possible. They seems to learn a lot faster that adults do. You are going to be a great uncle. Tell your sister that i said, Congrats a little early. Have a healthy and Happy baby.
A Friend.

Exposing the child to a second language from birth produces the best results. I know an 18 month-old child who is already speaking two different languages quite well.

Babies exposed to two languages simulteneously ( or more) speak both well but start speaking a little later. I don't know about a few basic words, there should be more exposure than that. In any case it won't hurt, and it's not too much.

Little kids are sponges. Start as soon as she's born. (She'll associate the sound of the words with objects.) Be prepared to keep it up for the next 7-18 years, though. Because if it's not reinforced, she'll just forget it.
There's no such thing as too much learning!

Baby humans have an ability to learn languages at an accelerated rate.
This ability disappears by around the age of six years old, which is why it is so much harder for older humans to learn new languages.

IF the child has no speech or hearing delays or hearing impairments you can start from birth.
Bilingual play groups are great. You get to socialize & baby gets to learn another language.

Speak in both languages to and around the baby from the moment it is born. That's the way to make them bilingual.

straight away, kids are like sponges. sign language is really helpful as they can sign before they verbalise. you know like signs for hungry, thirsty, different foods etc. best wishes
