Small meteorites hit the earth often. These are what we see as "shooting stars"

Occasionally there have been big meteors which have hit the earth. There is a theory that a big meteor strike caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

If by "they" you mean scaremongering, psychic, vegetarian, tree-hugging, dope-smoking, ignorant, druidic hippies, then yes.
If you mean scientists, then no, what they are saying is that, in 2032 an asteroid about 300 metres in diameter will make a close approach to Earth, its orbit may change due to the gravitational pull of the Earth. During its next approach, I think in 2037, there is a 1 in 45000 chance it may hit the Earth. It is not an Earth shattering size, but can do a lot of local damage, may cause tsunamis, start earthquakes etc. But life will not be extinguished, it just is not big enough.

yes it is true, im pretty sure it is going to be in like 2032 though.
