I think we need to have some type of assemblies in our schools to promote tolerance and acceptance. I think teasing and disrespect should be more often and seriously addressed than it is. We need to teach cultural, race, religion and sex acceptance. We need to teach acceptance and punish bullies.

As far as outsiders coming onto a campus, we need to have much more secure facilities. It is a bit easier to implement that in the grades of high school and down, but colleges are so big, it would be very difficult.

anti-conflict is not the same as pro-peace.
I think a lot of violence occurs beccause of unaddressed conflicts that people neglect and suppress in their awareness.

Actually, a while back Oprah had an absolutely amazing program about tensions and whatnot in schools, and the impact that it had on the students, the staff, and probably even the people watching the show...

there's info on the episode in the link.

If people just get to know each other, it dissolves the walls that separate... separateness facillitates fighting.

Great question/ topic!
Looking forward to reading more answers.

that's the link to the website that the Oprah episode was based on. Like, really, it is probably the most effective way possible to deal with that sort of thing.
Actually, this might stop you from checking out the link, but the whole thing is slightly similar to the gym scenes in 'Mean Girls', except much more serious of course.

My school was known as a violent school for many years, but last year they changed it into a school with many different campsues, each one with a 'theme', like there's an art school, a business, and a healthcare and more...now that it's smaller and more personal it's gotten better. Oh and we have a Calsafe and a PMP so that pregnant girls are in a different program.

Prevent bullying. Teach respect for others and kindness. Bullying is abuse, and it does lead to more violence. It cannot, and should not, be tolerated.
