First of all, my gravest condolences to any and all people and families who were affected by the shooting at Virginia Tech on the morning of Monday, April 16. My prayers go out to all of you and those who were killed. However, that's not what this question is about.
After watching a lot of the news coverage focused on the VT shooting, I've heard a few brief interviews with students, some of whom demonstrated great courage in the face of danger - helping others' wounds, holding down the doors to keep the shooter out, etc. There are also students who managed to find a way out of harm's way as soon as possible.
There is no shame in either of these acts; I admire one just as much as I admire the other. However, being a full-time University student myself, this really got me thinking: What would I do in that kind of situation?
Of course, there's no substitute for real life, but in any case, what do you think you would have done if you were placed in a situation like that?

Well, on a college campus, where carrying a concealed weapon even if you have a concealed carry permit, is forbidden, I'd have been screwed. But anywhere else, I would shoot the a**hole.

You are right to think about how you would handle a situation of deadly force being used against you or your loved ones.
The Virginia Tech shooting is a horrible, horrible tragedy but in time, it will fade from public view. Only those who have suffered a personal loss will be faced with the struggle to overcome their grief and restructure their life.
There were many heroes and some people were lucky enough to escape death.
Security guards can only provide a "sense" of security. They cannot provide virtual security. The objective of the security guard is to take control of the situation, keep people calm, stop panic.
After the reports have been filed, the investigations have been completed and the recommendations made, people will calm down and feel secure, then complacent.
Because of my personal experience, I favor allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons if they have had training and have not had a felony conviction. Most of the people in the self-help group Parents of Murdered Children have strong feelings about this issue as well as Citizens against Homicide. (Members of both national groups have suffered the loss of a loved one to homicide) Compassionate Friends is also a self-help group however it is for parents who have lost a child to any cause homicide, accidental death or disease.

People in these organizations spend a lot of time writing letters to parole boards, and getting legislation passed like Michigan's "truth in sentencing" and sentencing guidelines" (despite the fiscal impact).
It would be very nice if all the murderers, rapists, child molestors and other gun-toting sickos could be locked up...... or maybe even hanged, drawn and quartered for some.
The justice system and law enforcement can only do so much. The ATF can only seize so many weapons from the predators.
The reason I favor responsible citizens being educated in safe gun use is for protection. They will not be the ones using the guns to commit a crime or kill an innocent.
The shooter is the ***ONLY*** one responsible for the deaths.
It is difficult to emotionally process such a horrible event. Sometimes people react in stages such as denial, anger and blaming. This is a normal chain of reaction to tragedy towards the acceptance of the event.

Imagine if you will, what would have happened if the whole class room full of people had started throwing their books, cell phones, ipods, laptops, and their chairs at the shooter.
There might be only two deaths and a couple of wounded in the count, instead of 33 dead.
I'd probably be dead, but If I were any different then the rest of the people I would have tried my best to get up the strength to knock the shooter off balance.

The virginia tech taking photographs became into an fantastically tragic taking photographs. Now the question would be why this ensue and how we are in a position to ward off this from happening back. i actually have confidence the congress would desire to bypass a bill approximately necessary metallic detectors in the colleges. there is with regards to the comparable type of folk in airports, i think of it would artwork to make confident it incredibly is preventive. the guy that did it i'm rather confident he became into basically offended at his lady pal and went on a psycho rampage because of the fact he in all danger watched human beings do it in Iraq all the time. The media is taking a toll on what's happening in the international immediately in my opinion and if little ones are looking at a majority of those suicide bombings and a majority of those human beings getting killed, its rather plenty asserting to get a recognition in the U.S. historic previous e book is to shoot as a lot of human beings as you could!!! this is basically undeniable unwell precise there.

Although nobody could ever really know what they'd do in that circumstance.......being that I'm fearless and quite ferocious when I get my Munya up, I'da been like "YO, CHOW LEE, LOOKIT DIS" and whipped my : bookbag, laptop, cell phone, biology/whatever book, at the tiny m-f'er and then thrown a chair and HOPEFULLY someone ELSE could get in on the act and then we'd jump the punk-*** chump.
That's what I'd do.
Then again, I was also arrested for beating the crap out of a guy who tried to grab my purse, I was smashing his head on the parking lot screaming "YOU WANT SOME?" and someone called 911. The charges were dropped.
And I was wearing a skirt. And heels. SO THERE!

In the role of Campus Police Chief, I'd immediately dispatched ALL campus on duty officers to assist local police and county law enforcement officers in establishing an outside campus perimeter. This perimeter on cue, closes in and knocks on EVERY occupied building door, advising occupants to either evacuate or stay inside and away from windows until given "all clear". Citizens and students seeking evacuation will be safely escorted away form the campus grounds.
This way, the perimeter clears the area and sets up the arena for SWAT to position to ready. In any flashpoint hostage/random shooter scenario, people are going to get hurt and/or die....before the shooter takes his/her own life.
As law enforcement professionals, it's their responsibility to do all humanly possible to prevent further innocent injury or loss of life and maintain rights of law abident people and children.

I would of barracked the doors and moved everyone out of the range of fire. Its not worth trying to being a hero unless you have a plan. If he was in the open and you had no way of getting to him unseen you would do no one good dead. Blocking the door would safe others lives, which it did, and since it was only two stories i would made everyone get out that away better a sprain or broken bone than dead

To bad there are so many anti gun nuts and laws. If one person who was allowed to legally have a gun and had it with them they could have shot the bast**rd and reduced the carnage. This is true in so many situations. There are hundreds of incidents daily where legally armed citizens have prevented crimes, some times just by having the gun stopped the perpetrator without shots being fired.

If I heard shooting in my residence hall, I definitely would've locked and barred the door, to keep him away. I'll admit, I'm not a hero, and I definitely would not try to be one in that situation.
