I don't put up lights outside my house, because of concerns about getting up and down ladders, and things like that, if it weren't for that, I would love to have more lights on my house. That, and I don't understand how some of these people find the time to put up so much lighting at that time of year. I think it is an excellent idea, the Businessman's Creed is find the need, and fill it, and I think you have identified a viable need. I think this would be an especially good idea for seasonal work for someone that runs a roofing business or painting business during the summer, because they already have insurance, ladders, and people who are used to climbing up and down like that, and it would help to keep such people employed over the winter and at a time of year when they need the income all the more. I am not sure what I would pay for the service though, maybe a flat hourly rate if you're putting up my lights, and taking them down, and a rate plus rental fee if I am renting your lights. I think this is an idea worthy of devlopment, look into it some more, good luck on that...
(LOL, I wouldn't recommend using your avatar for a logo tho:)

A good idea, being holiday season, you can earn some extra money. But you have to take care of initial investment. Most of the people, decorate themselves, as per their desire. Some are ready to pay for get the decoration ( mainly rich, and those who does not have, serial lighting's.....etc., ) First you target the customers, and their likings, accordingly calculate how much is your initial expenditure, including labour charges. Add profit and then submit your rate. Charge should be per night. If they want some extra decorations , charge extra. accordingly.
I suggest you to make an album, showing different designs, take the help of Internet, and also your ideas, prepare a good album, mention rates per night below. Hand over the album to your properous Customers, let them select.
In the First year you can not expect any profit, as you have invested more on decorative items. But gradually, you start making profit. Apart from X- mas, you can also try on other ceremonies. So that you should be busy round the year.
Please do not get disappointed by negative comments thrown by others. In India, as we have one or other festivals and marriages all 12 months , they are literally grabbing money. Once settled , expand your service to decoration of stages, meeting venues, college annual days ....etc., Good luck.

Yes.
Here are some ideas:
1) In this business, people with a home prefer to pay for the job rather than by the hour. For commercial buildings, owners are used to paying by the hour.
2) Show prospects pictures of buildings and houses with the lights and give a price for each type.
3) Offer your service to the city government, to stores, to churches, and any commercial enterprises.
4) Does your work include putting lights back up in case of a storm? Taking them down after Christmas?
Good luck.

First off, if I had a home - probably.
The reason why I say that is because I have someone who comes over to clean my condo when I'm not officially "working". I hate doing labor. I'd rather be doing something else more fulfilling like reading a book, doing my hobbies or spend time with family and friends. So if I had a house and it "has" to be decorated then YES... as long as it wasn't expensive. I think $25/hr would be the most I would pay with an estimate of 4 hours.

That service already exists here in Calgary, but I really don't know what they charge. Some of the affluent neighborhoods hire them every year. They don't just do Christmas lights though, they also do patio lights and yard lights as well. I've seen some pretty amazing work! One deck was all done Mexican style with little track lights on all of the steps. It looked awesome! Maybe google some home lighting decor companies and see what they charge?

Yes. I think people would pay for it. It just one of those things where it is hard to get around to getting it done. I would target the larger homes where it is more difficult to hang lights because of the height. Target professionals who don't have time, or just don't feel like it after working long days. We've paid for lawn mowing and cleaning. Things we could have done, but just didn't have time.
You could do a test run by trying to sign people up before the holidays. Get them on the schedule around October. You will probably get repeat customers every year.

I think you'd have an opening in the market for elderly or not so able bodied people who may not have friends/relatives living nearby to help them put them up. Certainly sounds plausible to me. You'd need to investigate the demographics of an area to see if such customers exist and to see if Christmas lights are a common thing there. Best of luck.

Yes, I would - mainly b/c my husband has had 5 back surgeries, and I don't think I could get them up there by myself. Once a friend and I were talking about doing the same thing when we were going to do lawn work. We thought it'd be a good thing to do off season from the yard. I think I would charge about what I'd do to get my lawn mowed, as long as the house size was commiserate with yard, then an addit. charge for each display set up.

Seasonal work, good if your in construction and are out of jobs at that time of the year. You might have to take the lights down as well after the hollidays, but that can't be bad. More billable hours right? To be honest, I can't see there being a huge market in it, unless you charged so little that it wouldn't be worth your time.
