When choosing a mate.What is the importance of having criteria:non-negotiable characteristics of a good mate?

I don't get what this question means but its one of the hard essay questions on my english final. Can someone help me find out?

It means what are the must have quality's you would want in a partner.For me,compassion,intelligence,humor,and a kind heart are a must.

I would imagine that no addiction to hard drugs or gambling would be one. Must be a genuinely caring and compassionate person, or they won't care for your kids. Not lazy either for same reason.
