I just saw the trailer for "the condemned" and seriously the main thing seems very similar to the popular japanese "battle royale" movie.... it even looks like theyre in an island with a timed exploding band on them... Is anyone with me and thinks that holywood is just ripping off japanese movies?

thats my point the departed was japanese as well... and theres soooo much other movies that was asian first but they americanized it, such other famous ones are the grudge and the ring.... im just saying why the helll are they just ripping off asian movies rather than show them with subtitles? I know it may not reach a bigger audience but still, it gives no credit to the original creators.

What they need to do with movies like this as well as all remakes is when they release it on dvd, they should put the Americanized adaption or remake on Disk One and on Disk 2 put the original Japanese (or whichever country) version or the original movie that was remade.
Example: They should've released 'The Grudge/Ju On' together. They should've released 'The Hills Have Eyes(2006)/The Hills Have Eyes(1977) together. And so on. This way everyone would get to know the original versions as well as the new versions. As long as they didn't charge more than 5 bucks more for this, I'd be willing to pay a little extra for these sets. :-)

They probably bought rights for the premise. THe Departed was an American remake of an American film called Internal Affairs.

Subbing Battle Royale wouldnt reach the same number of audience as a remake would.

I can promise you that The Condemned is not just Battle Royale remade, like the Grudge is Ju-on. Why?

Because an American version of Battle Royale comes out next year. As does an American version of My Sassy Girl. Which makes me cry at night to think about. Elisha Cuthbert?! Bloody hell...

yes, we've seen different versions of "The Condemned" over the years. not really anything new (and yeah, i'll probably see it).

i'm hoping that if a US version of Battle Royale is made, they are smart enough to use kids. that was what made the original so gripping. we see adults do this kind of stuff on film all of the time.

and i actually like the fact that US versions of some japanese films are made or ripping them off as you call it. it expands the market and makes them more palatable to US markets, thereby making more money.

i just hope that some how the original makers are able to get a cut from what was their original ideas.

The Grudge and many other films are just copies of better Japanese movies. it would not surprise me to find out that this new movie is based on a better japanese film.
