I think the media is just trying to put some kind of identity to whoever this person was. How many times have you heard " Who could have done such a thing?" The Colombine shooters were white, and it was a big deal! Timothy Mcvey was white, again, big thing!
I don't care what the race of this shooter was, as long as he's not a threat any longer!

I don't know that people are making "such a big deal" out of it. I think it is one of the few identifying characteristics that is known to the public right now, so people are kind of clinging on to that. And I suppose it is more unusual for a shooter in the States to be of Asian descent, so it interests people because it is outside of the norm. As far as I know most of them have been white males, with only two females in history having gone on mass rampages.
There are a guy on Fox News (for the two minutes I could stand watching Fox) that speculated that if the man was a foreign student (not just Asian, but from any foreign country) that perhaps the pressure of being in a foreign country was part of what caused him to have a psychotic break of some sort that led to this horrible event.
Unfortunately some people are using this as a rascist thing, but in general I think it's more of a point of "interest," if that makes any sense, until we have more information about who this person was.

You are right. Most Asians who have come to study in the US are very serious and dilligent. They get advanced degrees and become leaders in their field and great neighbors.
Obviously the student from Shanghai was unbalanced. He could have been born and raised in Virginia and still gone on a shooting rampage. Yah, cultural shock may have been a factor in his psychological meltdown but the other factors were probably more significant.
His rampage was planned. The shooter was heavily armed with two handguns a 9mm and a 22 and plenty of ammo plus a vest.
It was likely a combination of:
o-- romantic bollux (was she his "girlfriend" how long had they been involved - if I can't have her no one can syndrome) and
o-- poor grades (an Oriental student usually focuses on studying, studying, studying and for leisure activity sleeping).
It is a horrible, horrible tragedy but in time, it will fade from public view. Only those who have suffered a personal loss will be faced with the struggle to overcome their grief and restructure their life.
It is difficult to emotionally process such a horrible event. Sometimes people react in stages such as denial, anger and blaming. This is a normal chain of reaction to tragedy towards the acceptance of the event.

From the average tv junkie's view it seems odd probably because they watch tv all of the time and Asian people are cast as smart, nerdy, passive people in tv programs. I too think it is ignorant to care what race the shooter is/was. The one thing that should be said, regardless of race, when someone does something like this is, is that the shooter was obviously mental. This shouldn't be about race, a tragedy like this should bring all races of people together.

I think it's because he is the first Asian mass murderer in the US. Usually it's a bunch of white wackos (I'm white) that do this. Blacks and Hispanics are good at drive by shootings. We all have our little niche of criminal activity's. Asian criminals usually sell illegal Chinese immigrants into prostitution or slave labor, or run rackets in China Town (Like in New York, where I live) and kill their own, like the Mafia does. But mass murder? Something new. I'm not trying to make lite of the situation but your question is a good one. So many Yahoo questions are popping up about the shooter being Asian. It shouldn't matter, he killed people and now we need to mourn the victims, no one ask about a break down of their backgrounds (yet).

I think the media just want viewers to know you can't just rely on past events and stereotypes. This is the melting pot of the world and we learn behaviors from each other. It's the same as when those shootings happened in Virginia and Washington two years ago. No one knew who was doing all these shooting, but I be darned if some forensic criminologist didn't come forward and say "it's likely a white middle age male loner" when in fact it was two black men who was going on a shooting rampage. So, see you can't make generalizations any more

I hate when people say Asians. Asia is very big. No one calls white Americans, Europeans. It's just to general. Germans, French, Spanish, English. It's just like Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Laos. I hope people understands this.

Because Asians are usually busy learning stuff and making good money. What could piss him off? Was it Andrew Dice Clay jokes about blind folding them with dental floss? Maybe his grandma works in a Walmart sweat shop in communist China. She may have been rifle butted for not making toaster ovens fast enough.

I think the issue is fear. Unfortunately racism is a large problem and when people are scared they tend to find it easier to blame a race. Look at the Sept 11 incident, now everyone is scared on those with Middle Eastern appearance.
It is a vicious cycle
