I had a professor in college, with whom I was very friendly and close, who always signed his e-mails by his first name. For most students, he wanted them to call him “professor,” but for those of us friendly with him, he wanted us to call him by his first name. I always avoided the issue by never even mentioning his name. I would start e-mails with “Greetings!” or just say “Hello!” when I saw him in passing.
It was only after I graduated that I was able to call him by his first name, because I finally felt more like his peer than his student. I think some professors think that if they ask their students to call them by their first names, it will make them seem more friendly—and in the case of my professor, it was a genuine desire to be friendly.
And think of it this way—isn’t it sometimes odd to you for people to call you Ms. Such-and-Such? Perhaps he finds it just as uncomfortable to be called “Professor” or “doctor” as you find it to call him “J.”
My recommendation: Try calling him by his first name, and if it doesn’t work out, just don’t mention his name at all. It worked for me for three years!

I had an instructor who really didn't care if we called him "Professor", "Dr." or his first name. The other professors called him "Dr.", because he only had his MA, but not the PhD. The instructor himself really didn't care and other professors had no issue with the students calling him by his first name.
Another instructor also said we could call her whatever, although I suspect it was a way for her to get on our good side. The class as a whole called her professor, and we still ended up hating her guts.
I had another professor who insisted I call him by his first name after my graduation. I felt really weird and tried to see if I could continue to call him "Professor". He started getting really mad and said that if I was going to be formal, so would he, and so we settled on a first name basis.
It's weird, but if it's what the professor wants, then go with it. You'll certainly (or perhaps you already have) encounter a professor who insists on being called "Professor" or "Dean" or whatever.
What's also equally weird are students (freshmen) who call their professors "teacher", even months into the term...

I find that kind of weird. Maybe your professor is going through a mid-life crisis and wants to sound young as much as possible. people normally wouldn't call any teachers by their first name, unless if that someone is a family friend or a spouse.

I hate it while my colleagues do this, because of the fact they do no longer seem to realize how uncomfortable they make some pupils. definite, if a school member asks pupils to call them via first call, they propose it. they in many situations are not incredibly gentle being stated as via Prof. or Dr., or they think of they arrive throughout the time of as much less of an expert determine if pupils call them via first call. some additionally merchandise to "unequal titles"; they call you Rob or Mary, jointly as you call them Dr. or Prof. I understand that, yet many pupils have been taught for years to coach admire (fairly those from different countries), and it incredibly is quite embarrassing for them to would desire to call a professor via first call.

It is strange in the sense that it's unusual, not in the sense that there is anything wrong with it. I think you should indulge him and call him what he wishes. Maybe you could compromise and call him Dr. J. If he's old enough to remember Julius Erving he'd probably appreciate it.

Yeah, it is kind of strange. I had a professor that wanted to be called "Steve," and so I called him that... but I always felt funny about it. Now I have one who said, "Just call me Claudia." I still call her Dr. Smith. I just feel better about it.

I don't find it strange. I neer call them dr_______ though. P.H.D's are fake doctors. I hate the ones that get anal about it.
I usually always go with Prof......only had a few that preferred their first name. I figure i call them worse things, so their first name is somewhat formal.
