Think 3 steps ahead of opponent, and keep your poker playing face on. Keep your hand hovering over a piece you could move (but don't intend to), and study things with a frown. I move my pawns from blocking my rooks and my bishops (from the inward board moves only on the bishops), and leave the rest of the pawns in place as long as possible. Move rooks and bishops down to keep opponent on defensive as long as possible. Works most of the time for me.

Have two different strats running at the same time.
And smoke and mirrors, make it look like your getting ready to swarm the right side of the board then charge in on the left.
And, control the centre, those 4 squares in the middle are vital to winning.

It is really thinking very hard... look at every counter your opponent will do to you and never let yourself be overconfident.

Cheating actually works well...but it's unethical...
Letting them go first and mirroring they're every move...sometimes successful...
