I was wondering as a local of Dubia (or if you aren't a local but have noticed these things) that tourists and expats have forced locals to band together as a nation (nationalism).
Before, you all went about your own things but now there are 'outsiders' you seem to stick up more for your own locals/community?

my assignment is on tourism media and its impact on nationalism in Dubai.

thanks heaps! :)
if someone could star this? i'm not sure what stars do but i think it makes the question stay up longer? sorry i'm a newbie.

As a local, i say: YES indeed, very much.

In school, we used to hangout as locals-only. Until now, it's like we are more adaptive to our own kin. We get along much better with each other. On the other hand, when it comes to business any nationality is fine. As I am in university now, the people I talk around with and take advices about courses are all locals -actually not a single foreigner, but this doesn't mean that we hate all foreigners.

Foreigners have a great impact on our society. They have changed our lifestyle and the way we do everything now. Even our cultural occasions (Eid, Ramadan..) have changed with the presence of foreigners. For example, in Eid, when they give the people money, the parents now do different ideas and take online ideas on who can make the best envolope.

Well, I just can provide you with my personal opinion.

85% of Dubai's population are foreigners. Most are from the Indian Subcontinent, Phillipines, Asians and Europe.

I do not think that UAE nationals stick more together than before. At least not business wise. Every foreigner who looking for an emplyment or business in general needs a local sponsor. But - these contacts are a male thing and business wise.

Most UAE locals do not socialize with foreigners unless with certain expats. Through different connections.
There even isn't any reason for locals to stick more together than before. Most expats even do not want to have any social contacts to locals. THEY stick together! Most locals are very open minded, traveled to the west, liked it , got schooled there and treat Westerners many times much nicer than the other way around.

Tourists very, very seldom have private contact to locals. Tourists want to enjoy the beach during the day and go to the bars at night. Sometimes you might meet a local guy, but.........

One important thing is taking place in the UAE right now. It's called: Emiratisation. Earlier the Emiratis depended on expats working in many fields. But education (very often in western foreign countries) took place and now Emiratis would like to take care of their own business. The demand of educated young Emiratis on the job market is increasing.

Tourists are wellcome as long a they bring and spend money in the UAE and respect the Islamic Culture. I personally do not see any connection between Tourism and "nationalsm".

Take care

guess the priority are no longer the travelers. The factors "money" pronounced suits extra particular expats and "so called travelers" than commonplace travelers. the traditional vacationer is coming to the UAE to relish warm climate, extreme-high quality seashores, worldwide cusine, impressive shape and huge procuring opportunities. of direction the locals like travelers to come again. There are 3 issues locals asking for: a million. please relish your stay, 2. please spend you money and 3. please do admire our Islamic subculture. that's all! of direction Dubai will choose the tourism economically. that's additionally the explanation why they like it. yet - locals do unlike travelers coming over here appearing stupid and ignorant. i'm no longer able to make certain any Emirati loosing his/her identity via boost of tourism. Btw: you ought to specify your question. There are the "commonplace travelers", human beings on bypass to and individuals taking benefit (in a bad way) of a provided bypass to visa. The final 2 pronounced communities you could no longer call "travelers", yet this is the team that usually reason difficulty. And that falls lower back then on all "travelers". interpreting your extra info to Amber: do you communicate approximately "vacationer = 14 days of stay" or "expats = foreigners living here"? that's a very huge difference. Take care
