what brand of graphics card. ATI or Nvidia? or an offbrand. if ATI goto ati.com and download catalyst control center. not sure about nvidia

You can adjust image resolution and color under settings in Display Properties. Games usually run faster under lower resolution and 16bit color instead of 32bit.

When playing a game, you adjust/lower the quality settings through the game menu itself.

Most the time, if drivers are already installed, you can RIGHT CLICK the desktop area, select Properties... then click on the Settings Tab, then click ADVANCED. Try that.
