Empathy is the antidote. Arbitrary implementation of empathy (administering the antidote) is another issue entirely.

Humans tend to reflect what they receive. If everybody likes you you'll tend to like them in return. Sadly, the reverse equally true.

Misanthropes are those poor unfortunates that are disliked. If you went to school you know there's often one kid in the class that everybody hates. That's the kid that nobody talks to. That kid isn't included in games during recess. That's the kid that the bullies beat up after school. That kid eats lunch alone with nobody to talk to. That kid isn't able to play sports, doesn't get invited to parties. When he gets older that kid doesn't get dates and certainly doesn't go to the prom. That kid doesn't get mentored by any teachers or counselors because they don't like him either. So he never develops social skills, never has close relationships and spends his life alone in a crowd.

Obviously, such kids don't learn to love humanity because humanity actively hates them. Thus, they become the misanthropes of the world.

What's the antidote? In principle being liked and loved. In practice it doesn't happen.
