on a fuel injected engine like that, you have to drop the fuel tank out of the car to get access to the top of the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump. not quiet something that a rookie should want to attempt. the last one i did in the drive way (12 years ago) took me about 4 hours. are you sure that you have a bad pump though. i ask because, the one i replaced did not correct the problem, i did it at the owners request.
the pump is turned on at two different times/ situations. first there is a timer programed into the computer that turns the pump on for about 15-20 seconds after the key is turned to the run position. second the computer looks for a sign of ignition (spark plug) activity to turn the pump on,it has to see at least 400 rpm before this will kick in.
i know some of this is hard to test for, but it might just be useful information.

Buy a Chiltons manual from an auto parts store. They have pretty good pictures. It is fairly easy and takes about an hour with the right tools.
Addition: it all depends on where the fuel pump is. Most older GM vehicles it is a mechanical pump mounted on the side of the engine.

Take it to a shop as you have to remove the gas tank to change the pump. They are large and heavy You would have to drain it to drop it . then you have to tap the retaining ring off then pull the old pump out . It can be a big job if you don't have a jack to lower and reinstall tank.
