When the "Great Depression" began in 1929, it left many financially ruined. The impact of this was so big that some countries experienced this ruin long into the '40s. Using this knowledge, Hitler preyed upon the weakened economical state Germany was in. He raised people's hopes by talking of a supreme race that would not have to depend on outside authority. A race that would not have to answer to anyone but itself. The rest is history, as we know it. The horrific stories of what happened shocked many around the world. For some, it is too much to even fathom the inhumanity of it all. And for others, it is merely a story, something made up to evoke sympathy. Just recently, Germany has begun to allow certain documents, detailing these events, to be open to the public. And only for individuals who experienced it first-hand, whose names are found on lists that were recorded purely for documentations' sake by the Nazis. But for the most part, I think the majority of the world can agree that it was and is a horrific war that no one wants a repeat of.

That was actually Reinhardt Heidrich - Hitler believed strongly in social Darwinism and allowed his underlings great freedom to do as they wanted as long as it was within his general ideas. Prior to the actual holocaust, as per Hitler's ravings in speeches, being a Jew was basically made illegal in an attempt to get as many as possible to leave. many did leave but the Nazis made that difficult by compensating all wealth under the premise that it was stolen from the German people plus few countries would take in the Jewish refugees and many passed laws making it harder for Jews to immigrate (including the USA). The actual Holocaust was a result of this. Unable to steal all they had and kick them out, all that could were turned into slave laborers until they were unable to work and the rest were systematically killed. Heidrich was feared even by his boss, Heinrich Himmler, since he was in charge of the police and Gestapo and was probably killed by SS doctors when he was slightly wounded in an assassination attempt in Prague (he was appointed dictator of that area by Hitler). Heidrich planned and carried out the extermination (the final solution). People were told the Jews were being moved to work camps and few knew or refused to believe what was actually happening. Disarming the public in general, huge public backing of the Nazis (more then 80% voted for Hitler just prior to him ending all elections), secrecy, apathy, and disbelief that the German government was capable of doing that allowed it to happen. The world refused to believe at first too until the survivors were released after the camps were overrun then were aghast. So, it went from: don't care, to don't believe, to oh my gosh.
