Well to the first guy, that would be a nice answer if they didn't have two specific names, one being the northbridge and the other being the southbridge. I know the second guy already said that, but I figured I'd give his answer a little backup.

The chip with heatsink (near cpu) call Northbridge.The second one is Southbridge at below of Motherboard.The function for northbridge is to interface with FSB,AGp/Pci.The southbridge chip interface with Lan(networking)

Actually, believe it or not, there is no special name for those chips (as far as I'm aware). Together, they are just called the "chipset"
