It can range from what you said to anything.Depends on the person.Depression is considered a mental illness in some forms and can lead to over-eating.Greed,I'm not sure of.I guess that could be the case for a lot of people. And Man yes, have always found ways to overeat.Especially in Eating Contests.
But Like I said over-eating could be the cause of anything,be it illness or just simple Greed.

It could be all of them.
Some people have a problem with controlling the amount they eat - they just can't stop. It might be related to processes in the brain that are faulty, in which case it would be a cognitive problem (not really a mental illness).
Whereas for some people, it just is pure greed. I have seen some people stuff their plates to the brim at all-you-can-eat buffets just to "get their money's worth". Sometimes so much so that they eat themselves sick.
And...as for the "decadence of Man", this is really subjective. I suppose you refer to the rich, who can afford to have and waste as much as they want. Yes, there are such people. They lead decadent lifestyles with high wastage simply because they can afford to.

I am So Impressed with ELFLAEDAs' answer.
EVERYONE should read this.
A message to you though Elfleada - So glad that
you are active. Just think of how heavy you would
be if you did not work!!! and just think how your
work would be easier if you lost a few stone. I am
not putting you down - but when you say you wanted
to tip the scales at 20 stone - that is madness. I hope
that you can keep going with your normal blood pressure
etc., but as you age it will be a different story.....
I over eat when I am depressed or upset. And I LOVE
my food.

In some cases it could be a mental illness because theres a thing called COE (compulsive overeating). And theres also a disease where people lack certain receptors in their brain that tell them that they are full so they just keep eating and those are the people who usually turn out being morbidly obese.

sometimes it's mental (not illness) and sometimes it just depends. Like why is the overeating taking place? Sadness/depression. Boredom. Stress. holiday. Family gathering/social event. There are many reasons why people overeat, it doesn't mean something is wrong unless it's followed by vomiting, then it's called bulimia.

no i don't think over eating is an illness, it could be a number of factors ,it was winter we do tend to eat more in the winter for basic instinct reasons, to shrink the stomach eat a little less every day ,don't eat fast i have learn it takes ten minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full, just don't eat any food that is white ,milk, rice, potatoes ,,etc ,etc .plus its spring do some walking, one more hint the doctor told me ,to walk stand up shoulders back, and hold your stomach in as long as you can let it out do over an over again it tightens the stomach muscles,I'm doing that myself, if you have to eat some thing healthy food ,

It might be that the stomach is the slowest organ in the body to send messages to the brain so by the time the brain has finally registered that you are full you have already gone beyond the amount of food needed to feel full.

Even though I think that fat people are a sad reminder of how useless some people are; I think you should face the fact that we are all 'mentally ill' in our own special ways.
Define normal.
