Two brothers are planning to ask two sisters (not their sisters!) for dates. If the brothers are Dave and Tom and the sisters are Fran and Mary, what couples can pair up for the date?

Dave and Fran
Dave and Mary
Tom and Fran
Tom and Mary

The way the brothers segregate does not affect the way the sisters segregate. Either brother could end up with either sister.

Mendel's law of segregation says that the factors that control a trait (the genes) separate from each other when gametes are made. The way genes are assigned to a gamete is random.
