It will save very little power because appliances on standby just don't use that much power. Plus stuff that has built in clocks such as VCR, coffe makers,stereos, things of that sort would always have the wrong time. Too much hassle.
Put more insulation in your home . Turn your air conditioning up a degree and your heat down a degree and you would see some real savings.

The answer is yes on some items. Take your microwave, the clock uses electricity all the time. A lot of your devices use a little electricity all day and night whether they are on or not due to internal clocks, maintenance programs, etc. Consult with the manufacturer if you cannot find out about any one thing. Some come with internal batteries so they will not loose their info if unplugged.

Depends on the what you are talking about. some things, that have a pilot light or a standby mode, then yes. If it's a device that has an on/off switch like a lamp, then no.

If its instant on then its still on, its just idle, everything now a day is instant.
