Dinoflagellates are autotrophic, using light to carry on photosynthesis. They are a type of alga. They must have light.

Zoomastigotes are heterotrophic protists that do not carry on photosynthesis. They get their nutrition from other organisms. http://www.rogers.k12.ar.us/users/ehutches/protista.phtml

Euglenoids can change the way they get nutrition. In the presence of light, they carry on photosynthesis using their chloroplasts. They also have an eyespot that helps them detect light in order to move toward the light. When light is not available, these euglenoids change to a heterotrophic lifestyle, ingesting and digesting organic matter. Pretty versatile!

The light is totally optional. The fish can live perfectly OK with just the normal room lights. I have a a cichlid and pleco in a tank that has no light for the last 4 years, they are doing fine. Tank lights are for growing plants and seeing your fish better, they dont need them to live. Ian
