i agree (with the poster of the question). to have a shooting happen on a school campus in this day and age and to treat it in the manner they did is inexcusable. two people shot dead in a dorm seems to be an automatic lockdown situation and treated as an emergency on the highest level. i mean they lock down schools when a threatning note is found, here you have two dead bodies. hello???????????????????????? campus police??????????????????????

Hey people, why hasn't every act of violence in the history of man not been prevented? The benefit of hindsight shows us how preventable every act of violence is, including this one.
The cops didn't lock everything down because it appeared that the first incident was isolated. How many times has there been an act of violence that wasn't followed two hours later by another one? They had no reason to believe this psycho would come back and kill some more because they weren't operating under the same rules as he was. You can't have a 100% effective contingency plan when there are psychotics roaming this planet. That sucks but that's the way it is.
Blaming gives the talking heads something to talk about. It fills airtime. I cringe at the thought of how the ripples of this incident will cause so much over reaction in the future.

When I was a student at Rider University, someone was shot during a party in the student center. The university continued to operate normally immediately after the shooting. What if the gunman went on a rampage like at Va. Tech? Rider would of done the samething as Va. Tech. There is only so much they can do and these incidents are rare.

Security guards can only provide a "sense" of security. They cannot provide virtual security. The objective of the security guard is to take control of the situation, keep people calm, stop panic. What would have happened if there were a warning siren (like the one for a tornado) that told students and faculty to run for cover at 7:15 am? Would any lives have been saved? Or would there have been chaos?
After the reports have been filed, the investigations have been completed and the recommendations made, people will calm down and feel secure, then complacent.
Because of my personal experience, I favor allowing individuals to carry concealed weapons if they have had training and have not had a felony conviction. Most of the people in the self-help group Parents of Murdered Children have strong feelings about this issue as well as Citizens against Homicide. (Members of both national groups have suffered the loss of a loved one to homicide) Compassionate Friends is also a self-help group however it is for parents who have lost a child to any cause homicide, accidental death or disease.

It is difficult to emotionally process such a horrible event. Sometimes people react in stages such as denial, anger and blaming. This is a normal chain of reaction to tragedy towards the acceptance of the event.

How difficult would it have been to put VA Tech on lock down at 7 AM this morning after the FIRST shooting?
It would've been different if they had a suspect, but if a college campus has 2 MURDERS and then no suspect in custody, why in the world would you let college kids get together in small class rooms w/a shooter on the loose?
Seriously people, I'm no genius, but it does not take one to realize how bad the VA Tech administration and police effed up today, someone had better be getting fired.

We are not trained or equipped to handle these types of situations as of now. How would you have handled the situation? It is easy to sit in judgment after the fact and point fingers. Perhaps we can pay more for schools to beef up security. this could of happened anywhere and probably will start to occur more frequently in the future. Perhaps there are some logistics that prevented officials from shutting down the campus. Even if shut down the killer could have had access to the other 15,000 other studdents and staff that would have probably still been on campus. Still too early to go laying blame in my opinion.

I think the lack of security is due to spring break. This madman knew this and took advantage of it. Then the coward had the nerve to off himself!
I heard from one of the students that he (the madman) was searching for his girlfriend and apparently was going to kill her, and when he didn't find her he went crazy and killed all those others.
I think this was an incident that was almost unavoidable. The madman had done his 'homework'. He knew how to get not 1 but 2 automatic rifles in there and execute his evil plans.
Everyone that attends Va Tech says that they are still going to go to class and that they feel safe.

I am sure that the school would have preferred to have every possible thing covered. e mails dont seem like the greatest way to warn people of a possible homicidal maniac on the loose. any time something awful happens people wish that things would have gone differently, someone could have done something to make it not happen. That is just the way it goes. Stuff happens just like it does, it is nobodies fault but the person committing the hellish act. they themselves are to blame.

don't know all the details, also more than 33 could've been killed.
I do know that campus police/ security should've put the whole campus on lock down until the situation was contained and that did not happen today which resulted in 33 people murdered.

I think the Virginia Tech staff did as they thought right for the situation. We don't know all the details and should not be so quick to point fingers.
