"focusing on the positive" really just means that I am not looking for speech wars with the cranks on this site.

if it weren't for the feminist movement, women would be seen as even stupider and emotional than people do now. it would be common to believe that wome just weren't as mentally capable as men. they wouldn't be allowed to have most jobs besides elementary school teacher, nurse, and secretary. even then, they would be paid a lot less than their male counterparts. men would be allowed to rape their wives and the victim would always be blamed. women would respect themselves less, be sexually repressed, and unable to realize any of theor dreams that didn't center around marriage and kids. single mothers or older single women would be scorned and ostricized. women would always be expected to defer to the judgement of men. our educational options would be severely limited. and so on and so forth...

recently feminism has been pretty inactive. women seem to have just gone to sleep, and our gains seem to be slipping, to be honest. there was the shift in the 90s away from essentialism, and that's a great thing. there have been lots of programs put in place in the past few years that help women in third-world countries: education, finance, FGM refugees... but that's about it. we need to get off our lazy butts, demand an equal rights amendment, and finish what we started.

Carole Gilligan, Susan Faludi, Betty Friedan, Soujourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Sappho, Boadiciae, Mary of Magdalene, etc. Feminism has been around for centuries. The advancement of equality has been at the expense of other females along the way. By this I mean that our ancestors have been the ones that started in the ways that they could and they pass the torch from generation to generation. It is our destiny to continue to fight for the rights of ALL. We as feminists would be remiss if we only worries about the advancements of one group. We need to concern ourselves with women everywhere. Sure there are a great deal of injustices still present in western culture but there are far more heinous crimes being committed every second against women in other countries. One cannot be a feminist and ignore the plight of others. There are atrocities being commited every second in countries in the middle east and Africa. We need to also be aware and lend our support to help those women as well.

I would say that the last decade has been more of a time of slipping back into traditional sex roles, with the notable exception of more acceptance around people having children outside of marriage.
People seemed much more aware of the need for and benefits of Feminism in the late 1970s-1990s. I think the time for resting on our laurels is about to be really challenged with the coming Presidential election.
Good luck

Just that we are equals & if we work as partners rather than adversaries, we can accomplish a lot more. Every successful couple has a relationship where the partners focus on their strengths to make the relationship work.
