ok i bought a molly fish that was already pregnant from the pet store she is white with orange on her tail and orange just on the top of her back so i can see the gravid spot very well, i have had her now for like 3wks.she is extremley huge and her belly is squared off,but her gravid spot is completley orange except for maybe 1 or 2 black dots in there.can she deliver like this or does her gravid spot have to be dark????the gravid spot hasnt changed in the past 2 weeks so i dont know if this is just the color of the babies or what..do you think i need to move her in a breeding tank yet or wait til the gravid spot is completley black...by the way i have been monitoring the gravid spot and in 2 weeks she has only developed 2 black dots...what do i do

She can deliver i that condition. You mention that she is orange and while, what you are seeing is some of the orange coloration on the babies. She could deliver at any time. Personally, I would move her to your breeding tank.

I've been through this,
she wont release her fry anytime soon, just swimming aorund in the tank with other fish, so what to do is onc eyou mnotice maybe some more black dots inside the orange gravid spot, and the spot all together doesnm't get completely black or darker within 2-3 weeks after that, then put her in the breeding tank immidiatly and she should deliver over night or may task her up to 2-4 days!
Don't keep her in there for more then a week she will become to stressed, and that';s what happened to one of my pregnant molly's and she died along wiht her babies.

GOOD LUCK!

Since you have no idea when she became pregnant, and you have had her already three weeks it is likely she will be delivering her fry soon since mollies take on average 28 days. I would move her now.

Just an FYI, mollies kept in fresh water are more prone to contracting ich. Moving mollies to breeding tanks places stress on the mother to be. Breeding nets in a main tank is much better for the fish.

You could stick her in a breeding tank now to reduce stress, or you could wait until her gravid spot is darker, signaling that the babies are lined up and ready to get out to the world. Good luck! :)

If you have the females in a breeding container, leave them in there until they finish giving birth. Or,take out all the fish except the 2 females and add some thick plants (plastic,OK) When the babies are born, take out the mothers. You will need at least one tank for the babies and another for the adults.
