In June 1941. This was one year after France was invaded, and 7 months after the Battle of Britain was won by the British, thus preventing Hitler from invading that country.
The war had settled down somewhat: the British were far too weak to challenge Germany, and were fighting alone. To Hitler, they were 'contained' if not beaten. Fighting was going on in North Africa and Greece, but these were small in the scheme of things.
Hitler decided the time was right to fulfil his long-held ambition to capture Russia and expand Germany to the East.
After five months of successes, Hitler was at the gates of Moscow. Millions of Russian troops had been captured (the Germans made no provision to feed or care for them, and they did in the millions), but still the Russians kept raising new armies and resisting: the Germans massively underestimated the capacity of the Soviets to hang on.
In December 1941 the Germans, with the Russian winter arriving and temperatures of -40, were defeated at Moscow. They divisions were worn out by the huge distances and endless combat.
The war continued for 3 1/2 more years.
