Prior to industrialization, it was an agricultural economy. The factories were located in cities or the major ports/hubs of commerce that would BECOME cities.

It was a massive move as well . Job were part of it as well as the increased services -
It was the fisrt time men on mass left the home to go "out" to work as well - I have always found it interesting that in the 60's women were blamed for the destruction of the family for wanting a job
Before the industrial revolution subsistance farming was the norm and small communities existed with all family members working at or in the home - The industrial revolution brought cash - somthing most had not seen much of - a lot of barter existed .
I have beef you have pork lets trade etc.
Children worked with thier parents and were educated by them for the most part and schools existed to provide book learning - somthing that wasn't all that open to the masses

Although I like my services as in central heat and air and and and I also recognise it was the begining of the end for a lot of things people at the time took for granted -
Village justice is a double edged sword but I am willing to bet repeat offender - child molestation cses were never heard of

Short answer jobs cash services security hopes of an education and all that good stuff as well as acess to a wider market . If your community didn't grow it you didn't eat it - a city offered a number of community's wares and crops

I would say jobs, but, that seem too easy and someone already mention it. How about, they not have to walk as far to go to the store?
But, I really think it had something to do with jobs. It the same today. Why do so many people live in Houston instead of the Ozark Mountains?

advertisments promised more money and a better living, people were gullible and followed what they heard or saw
