What is lightning, what causes it, how can you explain it to 9 and 10 year old kids?

Most kids that age that I know are pretty smart. Just start with the static charge basics; ask if they've ever touched a door knob and gotten "zapped" and take it from there.

It's like static electricity in the sky. It's usually caused by 2 clouds "rubbing" together and generating a spark, but a BIG one. This spark is like a shock, like you sometimes feel when you touch someone or something. Thunder is the sound that lightning makes when it heats up the cooler air around it.

Just like water flows from a higher place to a lower place, Lightning is power (electricity) which flows from a higher place (having more charge) to a lower place (having low charge)

they are big sparks, occuring when voltage is too high betwen cloud and earth that electrons simply dash to the ground. the voltage was caused by rubbing, warmed water was evaporatesc/ cools / falls/ goes up with the evaporation / cycle repeats ... and boom static electricity bring up the big spark
