The Battle of Chancellorsville was the result of a campaign led by Union General Joseph Hooker in May, 1863 to capture the Confederate Capitol, Richamond and destroy the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia which recently sent a part of its force to surround the garrison at Suffolk. Virginia near Newport.

However as Hooker crossed the Rappahannock he basically instead becoming the aggressor, waits for Lee. Lee and Jackson realize Hooker is staying put so they decide to attack Hooker through the Wilderness where Hooker leaves his lines open.

Jackson takes his troops around the Union Right and accomplishes a complete rout. This great move is tragically ended with Jackson fatally weounded by accident by his own men.

The Confederate finish their rout the next day of the Union Troops after Hooker froze at his great opportunity at command.

For many, The battle of Chancellorsville was the greatest victory for the Confederacy during the war, but many agree because of tragic loss of General Jackson. It was at such a cost the Confederacy in the end could have ill afforded and didn't. along with a 1/4th of all troops engaged.

THe Union wouldn't forget this battle two months later in Pennsylvania

It was Lee and Jackson vs Hooker. The Confederates were the victors but at a heavier price than their victory allowed them. The Union was defeated and retreated . Union losses were basically around 17000 men or 13% of the force oither killed, wounded , missing of taken prisoner. The Confedrae losses numbered around 13000 men or 22% of their force in which Lee could ill afford to lose . the Union outnumbered them by a 140,000-68000 but the Confederate battle plans were flawless. The tragedy of Chancellorsville was not only the South losing a greater percentage of casualities though less in actual numbers but also the wounding of Stonewall Jackson by men who believed he was a Union soldier. Lee lost a valuable asset that would haunt him as the battle of Gettysburg approached.
