Can't say why you ran out of oil -- not enough information... could be any number of things... poked hole in oil pan, neglected to ever check to see if your oil was low, somebody forgot to reinstall the pan screw at the last oil change... and about a dozen other things.
But that clanking was what was left of your connecting rod bearings and wrists telling you that your engine was about to go to that great junkyard in the sky. Without oil, they tend to do that. Without oil, all of the metal bits try to weld themselves together due to the heat caused by the friction.
There's nothing worth salvaging on the bottom end of that engine. Time to consider a rebuilt, a decent used engine, or just scrapping the car. Depends upon what it's worth plus the price of an engine.

You probably seized the engine by starving it of oil. My sisters did this to a perfectly good Chevy and turned it into a paperweight. You have to check the oil once a week in ordinary driving and daily if your car uses oil. I know this like closing the door after the cat has run away. You'll need to try and find another engine, used or new. This is going to be out of warranty as the engine was ran without oil.

Obviously you didn't ever check the oil and it finally ran out leaving your motor to run without lubrication. The dry engine components started to clank and you probably broke a rod as well. Dig a big hole and bury it if it's old or have the motor rebuilt if the car is young. If you can afford it buy a new motor or buy a new car.

May have had a head gasket go. The temp should have went up with the oil. It looks like you better be pricing a short block. You are into some money now, either that or trade the thing and get a new one. Good luck

i own a repair shop ,and it sounds like you pretty much have blown the engine up in it ,that's a bad sign when you pull the dip stick out and see no oil it kind of makes you know its a goner for sure, the clanking sound you heard probably was a rod or a crank shaft in it ,it could have been anything though, once one runs out of oil it pretty much ruins it for good, but id say this one isn't worth repairing, good luck hope this helps.

Fan belt. Get to the mechanic. It can break at any moment and really cause a lot of damage. You could be out on the freeway in the dark. Do it NOW.
