Go to a department store like Macy's, Neiman Marcus, or Nordstrom and ask the sales people there. They will be able to help you out.

Don't worry about heels because your bf isn't very tall. You want to look good, wear good shoes--heels are a must!
It would help if you said what type of shape you have, that is a very important factor in deciding what looks good.
Since the reception is early evening, I think that you can't go wrong with a basic black cocktail dress--that means it is right at or slightly above the knees.
If you have nice arms, go for a sleeveless and bring a wrap--that is where you can add some color--a nice pink pashmina or blue, to go with your eyes, but, I think that baby yellow is great for spring.
Make sure you have a nice, small bag that will hold, ID, lipstick and not much else, this is where the maxi bag is totally inappropriate.
J Crew has a nice line of dresses, but it is tricky buying on line if you don't know your dress size very well.
Go to a good department store with a friend whose style of dress you admire, have her help you, or ask a worker.
Get a good black dress that fits fabulously and is simple and elegant. Even if it is a little pricey, it will be worth it, you will wear it for a long time and the next time an event comes up, you will be prepared.

For an afternoon wedding a nice dressy dress like one would wear to church would be fine. Since the reception and cocktail period is later you still could wear the same outfit.
You should be able to find some appropriate at a place like JC Penny's, Marshall Fields, etc. You might want to pick an outfit that will compliment your BF's suit, you don't have to match.

I would suggest a just above the knee dress, that way it is not to drab, or risky, a little more class.
For the colour it is always a good idea to find out the colours of the brides maid, and try to stay away from this colour, but you can try and complement the colours they are wearing. This way you fit in but don't look like you are a wonna be brides maid lol.
Try and find a complementary colour of your dates suite that way you both look hot together, don't to match your dress to his suit, try to find coplementry colours or match your dress to his tie or his shirt, but not to his suit.
A brown dress may look great beside his green suit, and maybe find a tie for him to match your shall, because May can still be a little cool outside specialy at night. Maybe he can wear a rose colour tie and you can get a rose shall or burgandy?
Good luck

Keep it simple and classy. No bare shoulders or mini skirt.
No bright colors like lime green. No large prints or big old polka dots.
Find a simple dress in aqua or coral. Find a flat closed toe shoe in a bronze metallic(will still be good for fall). Wear one significant piece of jewelry. Keep your hair simple. Do not wear too much perfume.
If you want to - ask your boy friend to wear a tie in the same color as your dress - just for the fun of the connectedness.

Maybe you could wear a pant, dress or skirt suit with some feminine accents to soften it up. Spring colors, light and airy. Try the formal departments of Nordstrom's, Macy's, or bridal shops in your area. Most saleswomen in bridal shops are Very knowledgeable in what to wear, colors, styles, etc. Go For It. You and your honey will look great together!

I would look at J. Crew
they have nice dresses that are formal, elegant and won't go out of style anytime soon.
One thing, DON'T wear white! You never want to compete with the bride.

I would wear a dress with some sort of pattern on it so it goes with your boyfriends suit but doesn't look like you planned to match with each other. Maybe something like this dress with a little cardigan over it.

Just don't wear white! Have fun!

I like young ladies in jeans. It makes them look more city like and it doesn't look like they try too hard but if you're trying to get this fellas attention, this might not exactly be what you want

I really do enjoy wearing long skirts once in a while. These are actually convenient than Denim jeans and also not as hot to wear.
