40 kilograms of what?

In order to convert a mass into a volume, you need the density of the material.

For example, 40 kilograms of water at 4°C =
40 kg * 1 liter/kg = 40 liters of water
then 1 gallon = 3.785 liters, so you'd have a little bit more than 10 gallons of water.

But if it were 40 kg of mercury, or 40 kg of benzene, the volume would be different.

You can't get one into the other. One measures mass, the other measures volume.

You turn it into pounds first.

40x2.205=88.5lbs

to get gallons of water into pounds of water you multiply by 8.3453.

But we want to to turn pounds into gallons of water so we divide by 8.3453 instead.

88.5/8.3453=10.60477155 (Gallons of water)
