1 word, devotion. you have to really devote yourself to music not just becoming famous. Me and my band, The Autumn Abyss, are gettin greally big in the local scene, we have like 40 people showing up just to watch us practice and several hundereds probably thousands at our shows, and its all from devotion and make sure that everyone in the band gets along other wise life will be hell going anywhere with your band.
