Depends on the squirrel. Fox squirrels and gray squirrels, for example, nest in trees. Ground squirrels (such as the fifteen lined ground squirrel) nest in the ground. Oh...a bit of trivia for you...did you know that ground hogs are just really fat ground squirrels? Hmmm? And i have actually seen one climb a tree! Best wishes!

Ground squirrels live all over the world. The American red squirrel lives in evergreen forests in North and Central America. Arctic squirrels live on the tundra. Mohave ground squirrels live in the Mojave Desert of California. These are only a few of the kinds of ground squirrels there are in the world.
Ground squirrels and tree squirrels are different. You can tell the difference this way. Ground squirrels will run to their burrow in the ground if they are scared. Tree squirrels will climb a tree or high building.

Squirrels will make their homes where ever they feel like! In the engine of your car, out of the wires of your gas stove. In trees, in the attic of your house. Near the ground, but that's usually too cool for them. They nest in the spring, meaning they look for and create their new homes in spring. I had a car once that squirrels would not stop trying to live in. It cost me thousands of dollars and eventually destroyed the car, even though I kept nightly guard on the car they would still get in. They are smart, tricky little fellows. Good luck!

In general trees are where squirrels nest, though there may be some species I'm unaware of that lives in a burrow in the ground.

What most people call a squirrel (grey, black, red) make their homes in a bunch of leaves in the top of a tree. What people call chipmunks are ground squirrels and they make a home in a tunnel they dig in the ground
They are all pesty rodents but that is where you would find them.

Squirrel's make their homes in trees. They do not live in the ground. They gather acorns and store them in large holes embedded in trees, which is also where they live.
