What are some plants that I could put in the water with my beta fish? Could I put the fish in a large vase with just any flowers (carnations, roses)?
Good suggestions, please.

No, about the only "vase" type plant that will be good with your betta is bamboo. In which case make sure your vase is VAST, and preferably wide not deep. I have set up a number of betta and bamboo duo's for people, all have turned out well.

Recommend a square vase, so you can easily get water in and out for water changes. Also, a floating plant, this time of year Riccia (crystal wort) is easy to find, is perfect for betta.

Use an aquarium fertilizer for your bamboo.

Terrestial plants are not recommended as they will die with the roots submerged. If its a cut flower, the water will pollute with the organic waste from the dead stem.

There are a few other species people use, like peace lillies and some semi-aquatic plants. I don't have personal experience with that, so I can't recommend it or not.

Have fun.

You could go with almost any plant. As long as you keep the roots only in the water with the betta it will do fine. For the vase type "tank" for your betta a nice bulb would do cause you can just sit it on top of the vase where it is small and it wont fall into the water. Go to lowes or wally world and look at all the bulbs and choose which you like the best. A betta will live in a vase with a plant in it and they will thrive of you do your work. Keep up on your water changes religously! also I add product called "leaf Zone" to my betta bowls. The product is non toxic to your fish and fertilizes the plant. Good luck!

As pretty as some of those ideas would be, for the health of your betta I would suggest you stick with aquatic plants. Granted, most are far less colorful than a carnation, but far better for your fish. As to which would be best, there are tons and tons. Check out whats available at your local pet shop.

no cut flowers. The open stem ends will leak fluids from the plant into the water plus as the plant dies, it will further contaminate it. Stick with either water plants or bog plants. Bog plants are plants that grow above water but have roots in the water.

Anything silk (without wire inside), or live aquatic plants as MM suggested. Mine has banana plants in the tank: http://www.crayfishshop.com/images/Banana-Nymphoides-aquatica-aquatic-plant.jpg - they don't require bright lighting.

I don't recommend plastic - these can have irregularities in the edge which can catch and tear the long fins.
