Certainly one of the saddest songs I know is "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto.
The song has nothing to do with sukiyaki or any other food, for that matter. It is a song about unrequited love. It was rechristened as "Sukiyaki" for American radio because programmers did not believe that Americans would listen to it under its original Japanese title. Radio folks took the name "Sukiyaki" because it was a familiar term.
The song has an incredibly haunting melody, one I have hummed for some forty years.
You can view a wonderful promo film (the precursor to today's videos) on youtube. Enjoy!!

The Christmas Shoes song, I cannot listen to that song, it has to be the most horribly sad song ever. I usually turn it off when I hear it so that I don't spend the following 10 minutes crying about it.
