Here is how it works,
If you have a High speed Internet connection, you probably would have a DSL or Cable modem. You have a network cable from the Modem to either a HUB or directly to your PC / Notebook.
Once you get a Wireless Router, the Cable modem can be connected to the Wireless Router. Once Connected, keep the Router and the Modem in a corner in the house to avoid the mess of all those cables.
Now anything that has a Wifi Receiver, like many notebooks have an inbuilt Wireless Card, can connect to the router and access Internet. Some Wireless routers come with 4 or more Ports to directly connect devices using cables.
Once you set it all up, you should be good to access anything with your wired Internet thru your Wireless Router.
P.S. there is much more to this like programming the Wireless Router, using various Protocols like RIP or IS-IS and all and even Ip Address Config and NetMasking. For more details, leave me a message and I will reply back.

You have two options depending on what yout ISP gave you. I assume the ISP gave you a broadband modem.
Option 1: Get a wireless router. That's a wireless receiver in itself. Connect the LAN port of the wireless router to the LAN port of the broadband modem. Connect the modem to the phone line (or cable, which one you got). The laptop can connect wirelessly to the wireless router if you already have WiFi adaptor in the laptop. If not, get yourself a USB WiFi Adaptor.
Option 2: Get a Wireless Modem Gateway (WMG). This one is neater and you don't need the broadband modem anymore. Check first - phone line or cable. Connect the WMG DSL-in port to the phone line (if it's a phone line) and you're on. Configure the builkt-in dialer to login to your ISP. Read the manual on how to configure that. The laptop can connect to the WMG if it has WiFi adaptor.
I prefer option 2. Less power and easier to manage (just one device). However, it is also more expensive as the price of the modem and wireless router is combined.

If you have dsl just connect your modem to the "In" port on the wireless router. Then if you have a laptop you simply connect to the wireless network. But if you have a desktop then you will need a wireless card for it so that it can pick up the wireless signal.

Yes, you install a wireless router which provided the WiFi signal for your home network. If you laptop already has a wireless card installed you're all set.
Here is a link to an excellent article on installing your home wireless network: http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wirelessproducts/a/howtobuildwlan_4.htm
