A friend of mine has a breeding pair of cichlids with some fry to give away. He tells me they are "tiger cichlids" though we all know that common names for the majority of cichlids is useless. He had wrote down the scientific name as it sounded (so it could be anything) but sounded like Pelvichromis Magarnius is what he told me. Of course I can't find it anywhere.

From what I've seen of them they are likely Africans, yellow and black horizontal stripes, no unusual lips or forheads, males and females look much alike.

Any cichlid lovers think they can take a stab at the actual scientific name for me, I'd like to research them before I get them.

Yes, I am an experienced fish keeper, other than the parameters, size and social behaviours for this fish I don't need a lot of other info thanks.

No I don't have any more info on them then what I gave, sorry, I know its a bit vague.

You are looking for the name: Parachromis motaguensis

These cichlids are beautiful! they are one of 4 species of cichlids called tiger cichlids. I know this is the one you are querring about because of the genus name. Cichlids with parachromis come from Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua. but only Parachromis Motaguensis come from Lake Malawi. Oh and fun fact the Parachromis motaguensis is VERY closely related to the Nimbochromis species despite extreme differences differences. GOOD LUCK THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL CICHLIDS!

Pelvicachromis are the "Kribensis" group, hardly candidates for the tiger tag. Seems to me that there was a Rift Lake Genus Pelvichromis, but I can't find them in any of my books. It may well be a case of taxonomic tag, wherein a bunch of Phd's get together and change all the names of fish that we've known for years. Like when Sven Kullander completely sacked the name Cichlasoma except for a few obscure fish that no-one knew. And gave us about 40 new names to learn. I've met him,he's a nice guy but why did he have to do that to us. I'll keep looking. Good luck.----PeeTee

See if this is your fish:

Here's a cichlid from africa that has that common name

Both of these have vertical stripes instead of horizonal stripes, but the first has a very similar scientific name to your guess.

This one has a very broken horizontal stripe and again a similar sounding scientific name and if african in origin

Past that I'm fairly well out of guesses personally

Your thinking of a Yellow Texas heres a picture

this one doesn't have the stripes but some do. and the other possible one would be a flower Horn that has been bred to be yellow but that is rare and expensive i doubt your friend has that.

You said horizontal stripes, right? See if this isn't your fish:

It sounded to me like a melanochromis auratus or a julidochromis marleri. Here is a pic of the marleri:

Gary P, I fart in your general direction. That is a picture of a labidochromis caeruleus (electric yellow).
