Why not try the Mountain West? There are National Parks and State parks galore, undeveloped wilderness, the economies are booming. Anywhere between the Rocky Mountains and California. There are big and medium sized cities, if you like the heat, you can try Arizona. If you like the cold, you can try Wyoming or Montana. Utah is a good compromise between the two. (And despite all the folklore, nobody gives a crap what your religion is, especially in SLC.)
Hiking, camping, skiing, low crime rates, affordable housing, lots of wilderness, great restaurants, and friendly people, make it awesome!

What about Australia? It's lovely here and work is fairly easy to find.
However, why don't you try Florida - I guess its closer to you and I have heard that the pace is quite relaxed.
Wherever you choose - good luck.

Uh, you forgot to mention a major factor - your skill set . . .
medical ? electrician ? lawyer ? welder (journeyman) ?
What the heck , move to the SF Bay area - lots of hospitals and lots of trade work with the replacement of the bay bridge .
High rents but as a hard worker , you'll make the $$$$$$$ .

Charlotte, North Carolina is a nice place. I lived there for several years and want to go back one day.
