I see news articles saying things like "the worst something in US modern history" When did US modern history actually begin?

modern history is not really a definitive period of years. every era, every decade thinks of itself as modern times (the middle ages were called so by the people in the Renaissance, who thought themselves to be in the modern times as well. JUST A FUN FACT).

for the current "modern" history, I would say anything in the most recent. perhaps you could say that modern American history (right now) started in the year 2000, the millennium (despite the fact that the millennium started in the year 2001).

or you could go as far back as the early 1990's.

modern times, or modern history is always the current and most recent years.

I would say that U.S. modern history started around the time of the first World War (1914 - 1918). It's when we first seriously began a sustained involvement in the affairs of the world outside our borders. Also modern(at the time) technological advances such as the telephone and the automobile were beginning to .be part of the lives of ordinary Americans.
