1:Can I SLI say a 7900 gs by PNY and one by eVGA, same specs but diff brand.

2:Can I SLI a 7900gs with 6600 gt?

No. 1 could work but not No.2. Or you could make life easier by going for a more powerful single card. A new 8800 GTS 384Mb costs less than 2x 7900GS.

from my understanding they have to be at least the same GPU, that is, if its two 7900gs, by different brands, they *may* work. ... but preferably identical.

I am pretty sure you cannot SLI 2 entirely different GPU's.
