Especially African Americans and Hispanics fared badly in the 20's and 30's. The Second Klan was on the rise, and lynching was rampant.

Many African American artists, (jazz) musicians and dancers emigrated to Europe to be able to live a normal life and have a normal career. When Billie Holiday did a concert in a hotel, her white band members could enter trough the front door, but Billy had to enter trough the kitchen. Many, like for example Josephine Baker, refused to be treated that way and choose exile to Paris or London.

On the West Coast, Hispanic boys were regularly beaten up by "patriotic" police officers and servicemen, even during WW2. See for example the "Zoot Suit Riots" in East LA in '43.

I think I'm right in saying that the late 1960's law came in that mixed races could marry. I went to a catholic high school and between the junior/senior year in 1961 in there we had just 2 blacks and 1 with a mexican name. I don't know what mix there was in the public schools. Never heard anything at all about hispanics until maybe the late 1990's so I have no idea where they were. It just never came up in conversation until illegals came on the scene.

The same as any other minorities: Polish, Irish, Germans, Italians, Greek, Lithuanians, and many others.
