Well, if it's not killer, you can try Tums.
They probably won't work.
You should also try all the behavioral things, like not eating huge meals, or really greasy meals, and keeping your head elevated at least slightly at all times, especially after you eat.
That probably won't work either.
Then you can keep a bottle of Mylanta in the refrigerator. Something about the cold seems to help a bit.
When THAT doesn't work, talk to your OB/GYN. He/she will probably tell you that Zantac is OK, and he/she might even allow you to double the over-the-counter dose.
And if you STILL need help, ask for a prescription for Prevacid. No more heartburn. Ever. It's the only thing that worked for me in either pregnancy, and I had TERRIBLE heartburn.

Tums work the best. There isn't too much you can do for it, sorry to say. Sometimes bread will work. Stay away from citrus fruits and spicy foods, and most dairy products!! They will bump up acid production, which just make heartburn worse! I usually keep a jar of tums in the car, by my bed, in the cupboard, and in any bag I have with me. That way, no matter where I go, I'm covered!!!

I've had godawful heartburn through my entire pregnancy, so my doctors okayed for me to take Famotadine (not sure of the exact spelling, sorry!), which is an acid reducer, up until my third trimester began. Then, they said it was okay to occasionally use a liquid antacid for severe heartburn days as needed. The rest of the time, Tums Smoothies work wonders, as well as giving extra calcium!

Most likely. Many women experience heartburn for the first time during pregnancy — and though it's common and generally harmless, it can be quite uncomfortable.
Heartburn (also called acid indigestion or acid reflux) is a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of the breastbone to the lower throat. It's caused by some of the hormonal and physical changes in your body.
During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation.
Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus.
Many women start experiencing heartburn and other gastrointestinal discomforts in the second half of pregnancy. Unfortunately, it usually comes and goes until your baby is born.
What can I do about it?
Though you may not be able to eliminate heartburn entirely, you can take steps to minimize your discomfort:
• Avoid food and beverages that cause you gastrointestinal distress. The usual suspects are carbonated drinks; alcohol (which you should avoid anyway during pregnancy); caffeine; chocolate; acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, mustard, and vinegar; processed meats; mint products; and spicy, highly seasoned, fried, or fatty foods.
• Don't eat big meals. Instead, eat several small meals throughout the day. Take your time eating and chew thoroughly.
• Avoid drinking large quantities of fluids during meals — you don't want to distend your stomach. (It's important to drink eight to ten glasses of water daily during pregnancy, but sip it between meals.)
• Try chewing gum after eating. Chewing gum stimulates your salivary glands, and saliva can help neutralize acid.
• Don't eat close to bedtime. Give yourself two to three hours to digest before you lie down.
• Sleep propped up with several pillows or a wedge. Elevating your upper body will help keep your stomach acids where they belong and will aid your digestion.
• Gain a sensible amount of weight, and stay within the guidelines your healthcare provider suggests.
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid any tightness around your waist and tummy.
• Bend at the knees instead of at the waist.
• Don't smoke — in addition to contributing to a host of serious health problems, smoking boosts stomach acidity. (Ideally, smoking is a habit you should break before getting pregnant. If you're still smoking and are having trouble quitting, ask your caregiver for a referral to a smoking-cessation program.)
• An over-the-counter antacid that contains magnesium or calcium may ease discomfort, but check with your prenatal caregiver before taking one, because some brands contain aluminum or aspirin or are high in sodium. You should also check in with your healthcare provider if none of these suggestions helps.

Tums, Mylanta, and Zantac 75. Those are the only things that I know of that can be taken safely during pregnancy. If it gets really bad, then call your doctor. Some women have problems with acid reflux during pregnancy. They might have some other ideas of what could help. Good luck! I feel your pain!!

You can try tums, but they arent recomended anymore for pregnant women. Even the bottle tells you not to take more than 5 a day. My midwife suggested milk, and eating almonds, not the smokehouse ones. It is worth a try. She said that taking tums will make your system alkaline, and if it gets to alkaline then you run a risk of infection. You will know if you are getting alkaline if your urine is getting cloudy. Mine goes cloudy after 1 tums, so I dont even bother. Good Luck

Some people will vilify me for this but my doctor suggested it to me and it worked beautifully, have 1/2 a glass of red wine with dinner and another 1/2 a glass about an hour before going to bed. It also helped to relax me, relax the baby, who would toss and turn trying to get comfy when i laid down, i got a better nights sleep and no heartburn. Red wine is good for you with all the antioxidants in it, and the tannins in it are good too. 1 glass of wine a night wont hurt you or the baby, and personally i think if your more relaxed during the pregnancy, the baby is more relaxed too when it comes out. Just dont go over board, stick to 1 glass, spread out over the evening. I found that tumms didnt help me, unless i had half a packet of them before bed.

Tums could, but after so many nights of taking tums it tends to not work anymore. You could try milk before bed but that makes some people throw up. You could also try elevating your head so that your neck and head is higher then your stomach, so its harder for acid to travel into your throat.

tums, tums and more tums. Also try keeping a food diary to learn what your triggers are. Mine were anything acidic (like orange juice, tomatos), but I could have some and balance them out with milk or ice cream.
