the main problem the Republicans had with President Johnson was that they felt he was to lenient on the ex-confederate states. they also didn't like the way he treated the freed blacks in the country. for example he opposed the civil rights act. he also tried to limit the voting capabilities of the blacks. the Democratic party would capitalize by announcing that it would be the party of the "white man" and began to support Johnson.
the most important thing to come out of the Reconstruction was thee 14th amendment. it would recognize that anyone born in the United States (except visitors, or Native Americans born on reservations) would be citizens of the country regardless of their racial identity, turning over the Dred Scott decision.
